I read that most restaurants have vending machines to order food before you sit at the table. And machines only take cash. Is that true ? We like not to carry cash on us.

i wouldn’t say that’s the case for most restaurants, regarding the vending machines. however, while cards are becoming more commonly used in japan, it is definitely still preferred that customers pay in cash. japan is a very safe place and you shouldn’t worry too much about carrying cash. if anything, just don’t carry all the cash you have if you’re that concerned about it. someone also mentioned that some places take pasmo or suica cards as a form of payment, that’s a good idea if you want to carry less cash, but ultimately you will need cash to load the suica or pasmo card.

Can you please tell me what is suica and pasmo?

The Suica and Pasmo is a prepaid e-money card for moving around and shopping. There is no more need to buy a ticket from a vending machine! It's pretty useful so you should buy it!
