Tempura is a typical home-style cooking in Japan. It is often referred to as a representative dish to Japan. Although there are various theories, it is said that Tokugawa Ieyasu, the general of the Edo period, liked tempura so much that he allegedly died from eating too much.

Hello!
My name is Ayako.
Our tempura restaurant is called Tenmasa, and it is located in Okachi-machi, Taito-ku (the area known as Tokyo Old Town). We have been running this family business for three generations.
As the owner of a tempura restaurant, I have watched this traditional Japanese dish become less popular in Japan. Due to tempura’s extensive prep process and complicated manner of cooking, many people have started to perceive it as being too fancy to make at home.
For many years, I have wanted to change this trend. Tempura could become as popular of a fast food meal as hamburgers or kebab, which have enjoyed widespread acceptance among the younger generation.

During the planning of my first trip to Japan, I considered temples, gardens and an imperial something or other. I decided to make my trip about my favorite subject ... food. Normal people consider visiting an ancient temple as a way to learn about the culture ... over a thousand years ago! The best way to learn about Tokyo's current culture is by exploring its food. I decided to sign up for Ayako's food class. Chef Ayako was so welcoming, patient and knowledgeable. Chef was so organized and had proven techniques. I would definitely plan a future class with her and highly recommend the cooking classes.
